Radiflo Mark V Leak Test System

Radiation Test Solutions, Inc. (RTS) provides radioisotope leak testing using the Radiflo Mark V radioisotope leak test system. Our lab uses the Radiflo Mark V, created by IsoVac Engineering, Inc., to verify that non-porous assembled IC parts are hermetically sealed. Ceramic package parts designed for space flight applications must be airtight and watertight to meet quality and safety requirements. This screening procedure can also apply to parts for assemblies and systems exposed to harsh environments.

Leak and Seal Testing

The sensitivity of the Radiflo Mark V system makes it the instrument of choice for measuring fine and gross leak rates in high-reliability devices. Historically, Krypton-85 (Kr85) testing has been the preferred and proven method for characterizing small leak rates in critical components used for space and military applications.
Leak testing is a relatively quick and inexpensive procedure for identifying leak sites in ambient conditions. The Radiflo Mark V Kr85 leak testing system uses vacuum and pressure environments to force Kr85 gas through any component leaks. Following exposure, we can test components in a Well Crystal detection chamber to determine if any of the Kr85 gas penetrated the part, primarily the die cavity area, thus proving whether the lid seal is airtight.

General Description

The Radiflo Mark V test chamber at our Colorado Springs location is cylindrical, with a 6-inch diameter and 20-inch depth. As a result, the Radiflo system primarily handles components instead of entire systems and boards; however, RTS can provide testing at the component level as well as lot testing.

Military Testing Standards

RTS’s Colorado Springs facility maintains ISO-9001 and DLA suitability for MIL-STD 750 TM 1071 and MIL-STD 883 TM 1014 testing. MIL-STD 883 TM 1014.18 and MIL-STD 750 TM 1071.18 detail various types of leak or seal testing procedures.
Specifically, MIL-STD 883 Test Conditions B1, B2, and B3 and MIL-STD 750 Test Conditions A, B, G1, and G2 describe the methods that use Kr85 gas as a tracer gas to reveal its course through the component, exposing the cracks and leaks. We support tests compliant with these military standards for both gross and fine leak test procedures.
